The AFL should have forced star Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron off the field after he suffered a head knock against Port Adelaide on Friday night or should have fined the Cats for failing to do it.Best porn XXX. That was the view when The Age football experts Caroline Wilson, Jake Niall and Michael Gleeson discussed the events of round nine in this week’s Real Footy podcast. Wilson said the fact Cameron was allowed to stay on the ground – and was then diagnosed the following day with delayed concussion – undermined the league’s rhetoric about how seriously it was taking concussion matters. “He [Cameron] was running away from the doctor … I thought it was embarrassing for the AFL,” she said. “If concussion is so important, why on earth is it left to the Geelong doctor [to decide if Cameron is fit to continue playing]? I’m sorry – somebody should have made that player leave the ground. “I still cannot understand why Geelong hasn’t been fined.” Jeremy Cameron falls heavily against Port Adelaide.Credit: Channel Seven Chief football writer Niall explained the Cats avoided sanction because AFL officials rubber-stamped the decision that cleared him to continue playing. “The look of this, to me, was terrible,” he said. “The reason Geelong hasn’t been fined … is because the AFL was involved, at real time, in this process. So, Geelong has shared culpability with the AFL. The AFL are not going to fine themselves are they?” The Cats were trailing by 17 points but on the comeback march when Cameron launched for a mark and landed heavily with nine minutes left in the final quarter of Friday night’s match. Coincidentally, their opponents, Port Adelaide, were fined last year for not making defender Aliir Aliir undergo a SCAT5 concussion test during a match against Adelaide when he clashed heads with teammate Lachie Jones. “They [Port Adelaide] got a $100,000 fine, $50,000 of that went into their soft cap. That is a massive punishment,” Wilson noted. In a statement released on Saturday, Geelong said Cameron had been diagnosed with delayed concussion and would miss Thursday night’s match against Darwin. They said their medicos conducted a head injury assessment at the time of the incident, where Cameron, “reported no symptoms and satisfied all AFL requirements”. “After further review of the video footage, and in consultation with the spotters in the ARC, it was decided there was no criteria to remove Cameron immediately from the field for further assessment,” the Cats’ said in their statement. Gleeson said the game should have stopped – as would happen if a player was bleeding – so that Cameron could leave the field to have a more detailed assessment. “[The AFL] still stops the play for a player to run from the ground with a bloody knee … because they don’t like the look of a player with blood on him, and yet we don’t stop the game if someone might have a head injury … it’s absurd,” he said. “He [Cameron] stayed on the ground. He’s one of the best players in the competition, it’s in a critical moment in a game. Now, if he was Billy Bloggs, half-back flanker, he’s taken off the ground and assessed, but this was the best player.” Geelong coach Chris Scott indicated after Friday night’s match that he was planning to rest his other key forward, Tom Hawkins, for this week’s match in Darwin, but that was before Cameron was diagnosed with delayed concussion.
