OpenAI CEO calls GPT-5 Orion report ‘fake news out of control’

There have been reliable reports that Microsoft’s leadership has become frustrated with the drama unfolding recently at OpenAI. And while most of Microsoft’s biggest competitors haven’t gone multi-model, some plan to. ChatGPT search offers up-to-the-minute sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather and more, powered by real-time web search and partnerships with news and data providers, according to the company. “Unlike the release of OpenAI’s last two models, GPT-4o and o1, Orion won’t initially be released widely through ChatGPT. Instead, OpenAI is planning to grant access first to companies it works closely with in order for them to build their own products and features, according to a source familiar with the plan. Regardless of what product names OpenAI chooses for future ChatGPT models, the next major update might be released by December.

OpenAI has dropped a couple of key ChatGPT upgrades so far this year, but neither one was the big GPT-5 upgrade we’re all waiting for. However, I still had to rely on my personal knowledge and experience to know that the responses were factually correct. Google’s AI Overviews finally made an appearance in response to this prompt, offering a detailed summary from at least four government-backed sources. This is heartening to see, given that ChatGPT only referenced third-party websites like GoodRx, Mayo Clinic, and WebMD.
